Your one-day Beaujolais wine tour with us will take you into the heart of gorgeous Beaujolais wine-growing country which stretches some 50km just north of the city of Lyon. We will travel along part of the road of the Beaujolais crus so that you really get an understanding of the uniqueness of this wine-growing region which boasts 12 different appellations (Beaujolais, Beaujolais Villages & the 10 different village crus such as Fleurie, Chiroubles, Moulin-à-vent, Julianas, etc.
During the visits to the different wine growing estates you will learn all about different vinification techniques as well the different “terroirs” that produce the diversity of styles of wines so that you gain a better understanding of the influence of soil composition in the development of aromas and style of wine. It will also be your opportunity to gain insights into vineyard techniques such as canopy management and pruning as well as the fascinating subject of organic, biodynamic and natural wine-making techniques which are gaining favour with producers and consumers alike.
Lunch will be in a typical Beaujolais bistro or restaurant where you may be able to sample of the local specialities such as the local saucisson cooked in Beaujolais wine, coq au vin or for the more adventurous, andouillette (chitterling sausage) cooked with Beaujolais wine. And of course, you can order a glass or two of the local wine to accompany your delicious meal.
The emblematic grape variety for the Beaujolais appellation red wines is gamay noir à jus blanc. Resulting from a cross between pinot noir and gouais, this unique grape variety found in all the Beaujolais region’s appellations. This early-ripening, fertile grape variety gives the best of itself here as it is planted on the clay-limestone, sandy or granitic soils, which run through the Beaujolais appellation vineyards and which provide quite diversified typicity.
Although the « nouveaux » wines still have their place here, the new generation of wine growers are now producing some excellent dense and more structured reds, many of which are also quite age-worthy too ! Furthermore your day out with us will enable you to discover some excellent white wines produced from the Chardonnay varietal ; as well as some delightful and refreshing rosé wines. One of the les lesser known French wine tours but a must for lovers of rural France.
